Empowering women in taxation: the role of women-led networks

Efforts to promote the use of tax systems as a tool to promote gender equality require intentional considerations and adaptation on the part of policymakers and government actors. The role of tax administrations in mainstreaming gender could take various forms which include empowering women to take leadership roles, the collection of gender disaggregated data, and improving the experience of women taxpayers.
A systematic design to empower women to take leadership positions have a multifaceted purpose and lays the foundation to advance the other goals. Having more women in tax authorities can attract more women to join the sector and improve the treatment of women taxpayer in tax institutions. It can further bring a positive impact on tax collection by improving women’s trust in tax systems and tax enforcement.
Recognising the need to embrace gender equality in tax systems and the key role of women tax networks in empowering more women to join the tax sector and take on leadership roles, on 26 June 2025, the Network of Tax Organisations (NTO) and the Addis Tax Initiative (ATI) will host a webinar on the topic. The event will bring together experts and country examples from the networks of both the NTO and the ATI. By doing so, the aim is to contribute to existing efforts which work to encourage the increased participation and engagement of women in the tax sector.
