The need for more inclusive, equitable tax and multilateral systems

Join the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) for this Sussex Development Lecture with Chenai Mukumba, Executive Director of Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) – a regional network of organisations across African countries that envisions an Africa where tax justice prevails and contributes to equitable, inclusive, and sustainable development.

In a context of significant cuts to aid spending by the US and countries across Europe combined with rising global need, taxation – and the need for tax justice – at both a national and international level has never been such a critical topic.

Fresh from the UN Tax negotiations in Nairobi, Chenai Mukumba will discuss why reforming the global tax architecture matters for everyone, not just the Global South that is pushing for change. A fairer system would strengthen trust in multilateral institutions, reduce harmful tax competition, and ensure that all countries—regardless of size or income level—have a voice in shaping global rules. By addressing systemic imbalances, we can build a framework that promotes sustainable development, curbs illicit financial flows, and fosters economic stability for all.
